The Power at the Pinnacle

In the grand tapestry of governance, the apex is adorned with rulers - be it a king, a queen, an emperor, a warlady, a mogul, a chieftain, or an elder. Unravel the complexity of authority by posing essential questions:

Ascension to Power

  • Why are they in charge? Explore the genesis of their rule. Are they chosen by the gods, possessing a divine mandate? Or perhaps they ascended due to physical prowess, outclassing their peers in strength. The source of their authority sets the tone for the entire realm.
  • Official Reason: What is the official reason for their rule? Are they considered smarter than their opposition, displaying intellectual prowess? Are they ruthless enough to overcome outrage and maintain control?
  • Hereditary or Succession: Examine the nature of their rule. Is leadership hereditary, passing through bloodlines, or do rulers choose successors based on merit or other criteria?
  • Limits of Powers: Define the boundaries of their powers. What checks and balances exist to prevent authoritarian rule? Is there a council, an advisory body, or ancient laws that constrain the ruler's authority?

The Ruled and their Dynamics

  • Why are they there? Explore the motivations of the governed. In times of prosperity, are they patriotic and protective of the status quo? In periods of adversity, what keeps them from leaving? Unravel the intricate web of loyalty and dissent.
  • Attitude towards Ruler: Probe into the mindset of the common folk. Do they care who their ruler is, as long as conditions remain stable? How does the ruler manipulate or inspire allegiance to maintain control?
  • Scapegoats and Enemies: Analyze the historical strategy of rulers using external threats and scapegoats to unite their people. Who is the hereditary enemy of your realm? Whom do they blame for plagues, wars, famines? Uncover the scapegoats that shield rulers from internal discontent.

The Administration Nexus

  • Chain of Command: Navigate through the administrative intricacies of your realm. Does the queen preside over lords? Does the emperor have knights under their command? Does a god-king have a dedicated clergy?
  • Leadership Needs: Recognize the necessity of leadership at various scales. Ten people may need a leader, a hundred an administrator, and a thousand a local ruler. Unravel the nuances of your chain of command.
