The Boiling Isles | Downloadable Map
To pair with this week's YouTube tutorial video Creating Culture in your Fantasy World, our mapmaker Ryan created a special panel map of the Boiling Isles - the favourite destination of the Owl House series fandom.
Many thanks to our friend Bearbro1234 on Reddit for his work on the map that we used as reference (you can see more details in the YouTube video). We hope he enjoys the final result of our work.
For those who want to create a map like this at home, it could not be simpler. Don't be intimidated by the art styles and the attention to detail: it is much simpler than you may think. All you need are the right tools and the time to apply them.
What We Use
For this map, Ryan started by creating a pencil sketch of the outline and roughly locations of all of the labels and icons. Then he used a series of fineliners to create the outline of the landmass (0.7mm black), then the labels (0.4mm red), then the landscapes (0.3mm black, 0.05mm black), and finally the vegetation and water (0.4mm various colours).
This map has five different styles, to showcase how fantasy maps have changed over the years. From left to right: topographical, classic fantasy, two-colour, Red Quills, and finally an illustrated style.
Please let us know what you think of this map, and if you want to see a specific location in future!
