The Laws of Reality: The Fundament of Creation
Last week, we briefly discussed the laws of reality when we wrote about magic in our worldbuilding. Today, we step into the realm of reality – a reality shaped by your pen. Join us in exploring the intricacies of crafting the laws that govern your fantastical domains. When you’re creating your world, you may find that you need to sketch out what the boundaries are of what is possible. This is your guide to help you to do that.
We post new articles most days with tips, tricks, and questions to help you with your writing. Check out our other articles here: https://www.red-quills.com/blog/

Defining Magic
Magic, the lifeblood of fantasy, flows through your world. Define the rules that govern this mystical force – its sources, limitations, and the very essence that separates the extraordinary from the mundane. Magic should be a force that captivates and challenges, not a mere plot convenience.
What is the source? When you bring magic into the world, you must consider what the source of that power is, whether it resides in everything or only in a select few. The implications of the source and those that can access it will have a profound impact on your world.
What are the limitations? Those who wield power always try to push the boundaries of what they can achieve, and magic is no different. You must decide what limitations exist, what people are not and cannot be permitted to do.
What is the difference? When you create magic, there is a reason that it is magic and not reality. The rules that govern magic respond to mortal intention, and not to the forces of nature. But what are the rules and what defines magic from natural science?
Establishing Physical Laws
In this cosmic workshop, wield the power to set the laws of nature. Gravity, time, and the very fabric of reality – all at your fingertips. But with great power comes great responsibility. Explore the consequences of tweaking these laws and the ripple effects on your world and its inhabitants. We tend to assume that the laws of our worlds are identical to our own, but here are a few considerations:
What is the world’s balance? If your world has two moons and our gravity, then the tides will be very complicated. If a world has a red sun, it will be closer or colder. The forces that we did not understand for most of history still existed: UV killed us even when we were unaware of its name, and radiation haunts our cursed places.
What alters time or space? In our world, the presence of mass warps the flow of time. We don’t notice it, but it is a fearsome force. What else can alter time - magic, perhaps, or the presence of something otherworldly?
Balancing Rules and Creativity
Striking a balance between rules and creative freedom is an art. Your laws should guide, not confine. Dive into the dance between structure and innovation, understanding that rules are the framework upon which your fantastical tapestry is woven.
Don’t worry too much about writing down the exact detail of every law. The mathematics of it is not as important as your understanding of it. When you detail the laws of reality, you are the one who needs to know them and implement them. Taking time to become aware of them will help in the long run.
