Creating an Atlas

The Atlas of Endon Project

Mapping a fantasy world in its entirety is the end goal for anyone dipping their toes into the waters of fantasy cartography. It is the white whale, the holy grail. Being able to map out a world or region in exquisite detail and have the information needed for any contingency, any question, within reach at a moment’s notice.

It is something that I have been working on for quite some time. Long enough to have made dozens — if not hundreds — of maps. All of the lands within and around the Kingdom of Endon.

The Kingdom of Endon stretches from the town of Shallowport in the north, at the edge of the northern waters, to the dwarven cities of the Iron Mountains to the south. From Alaron to the west, to Endon’s Pass in the east. In these cities, we are privileged to house some of the greatest institutions in the north, from the Hall of the Minstrels, the Academy of Magic, the University of Talbot, to the great fortresses and marvels of architecture. Its capital is the city of the same name: Endon, jewel of the north, city of a hundred thousand souls!

Endon is ruled by the royal family, who dwell in the Hall of the King in the capital, but the responsibility for local rule is overseen by the local lords and the appointed mayors in the various cities. Various guilds also vie for power across the political arena, from the guild of merchants to the guild of thieves (though those two are undeniably similar).

There are many adventurers in the kingdom, and many in search of glory. Though Endon is often open to travellers, the only ways to enter with ease are via the city in Endon’s Pass or by ship to Shallowport – unless one wants to risk haggling with the dwarves: rumours abound about the tunnels that lead southward from the cities of Heimtod and Heimflad. That being said, once inside the kingdom, movement is free for all. The people are open and friendly, and there is little in the way of internal conflict, within reason.
